ICAN Delisting, Suspension & Re-admission: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) is the premier professional accounting body in Nigeria, responsible for certifying chartered accountants and regulating the ethics, conduct, and practice of its members. As a regulatory body, ICAN upholds high standards of professionalism and discipline, which include mechanisms for delisting, suspension, and re-admission of members when necessary.

This blog post offers a detailed, up-to-date guide on ICAN’s policies and procedures regarding delisting, suspension, and re-admission, helping members and prospective members understand the implications and how to navigate each process.

Understanding the Terms

1. Suspension

Suspension refers to the temporary removal of a member’s rights and privileges due to disciplinary actions or non-compliance, such as failure to pay annual dues or violation of ICAN’s Code of Conduct.

2. Delisting

Delisting occurs when a member’s name is permanently removed from ICAN’s register. This can happen for gross misconduct, prolonged default, or as a result of disciplinary tribunal decisions. A delisted member is no longer recognized as a chartered accountant under ICAN.

3. Re-admission

Re-admission is the restoration of membership after suspension or delisting, subject to conditions set by ICAN. This may include payment of dues, attending CPD (Continuing Professional Development) programmes, and undergoing re-assessment of competence.

Common Grounds for Suspension:

  • Failure to pay annual membership dues.

  • Negligence or professional misconduct.

  • Involvement in criminal activity.

  • Breach of ICAN’s Professional Code of Conduct.

  2. The affected member is invited to respond or appear before a disciplinary panel.

  • Failure to comply with recertification or CPD regulations.

  • Criminal conviction affecting the integrity of the profession.

ICAN Disciplinary Tribunal:

The ICAN Disciplinary Tribunal—established by the ICAN Act—has the legal authority to hear cases and determine if delisting is warranted. Members may be:

  • Delisted permanently, or

  • Recommended for readmission after a stated period under specified conditions.

Re-admission: How to Return to ICAN’s Register

A delisted or suspended member may apply for readmission if:
