ICAN May 2012 Pathfinder: Past Questions PDF

ICAN May 2012 Pathfinder โ€” Foundation, Intermediate, P.E. I and P.E. II past questions

The ICAN May 2012 Pathfinder is available below for all four tiers of that era — Foundation, Intermediate, Professional Examination I and Professional Examination II. Each pack holds the Institute’s actual examination questions for the diet plus its suggested solutions and examiners’ reports, free to download as PDF. The May 2012 diet was examined across ICAN’s four tiers, with Taxation sitting at Intermediate level rather than the Skills level it occupies today.

Subjects examined in May 2012

Read this list as history, not a revision checklist. In May 2012 ICAN still ran a four-tier examination — Foundation, Intermediate, then two Professional Examination stages — with 15 papers overall. The three-level structure you know today only arrived with the November 2014 diet. Study these packs for question technique and the marking commentary; take your subject list from the current syllabus.

  • Fundamentals of Financial Accounting
  • Economics and Business Environment
  • Corporate and Business Law

Intermediate (4 papers)

  • Audit and Assurance
  • Taxation
  • Business Communication and Research Methodology

Professional Examination I (P.E. I) (4 papers)

  • Information Technology
  • Management Accounting
  • Financial Accounting
  • Advanced Audit and Assurance

Professional Examination II (P.E. II) (4 papers)

  • Financial Reporting and Ethics

  • Advanced Taxation
  • Public Sector Accounting and Finance

How these papers map to today’s ICAN levels

If you are preparing for a current diet, use this rough mapping when you practise with May 2012 questions:

  • Foundation and Intermediate papers cover ground now spread across today’s Foundation and Skills levels — financial accounting, law, costing, audit and taxation fundamentals.
  • P.E. I and P.E. II papers correspond to today’s Skills and Professional levels. Financial Reporting and Ethics leads to Strategic Business Reporting; Strategic Financial Management and Advanced Taxation carry the same names today.
  • Ignore retired papers such as Business Communication and Research Methodology — nothing at the current levels examines them.

Frequently asked questions

Is the May 2012 Pathfinder free to download?

Yes. All four packs above are free PDFs, each containing ICAN’s questions, suggested solutions and examiners’ reports for the May 2012 diet.

Which syllabus did the May 2012 diet follow?

ICAN’s pre-2014 professional examination syllabus — four tiers (Foundation, Intermediate, P.E. I, P.E. II) totalling 15 papers. It was replaced by the 16-paper, three-level 2014 syllabus from the November 2014 diet, and the syllabus has been revised twice more since.

Are these papers still worth practising with?

For technique, yes. Accounting fundamentals, audit approach and tax computation method change slowly, and the examiners’ reports in each pack show exactly how marks were gained and lost. For subject coverage, work from the current syllabus — several May 2012 papers no longer exist.

Does the archive go back further than November 2011?

November 2011 is the oldest diet with complete PDF packs. A May 2011 set exists only in legacy .doc format, so it is not published here.
