ACCOUNTING PROFESSION – MY OBSERVATION
Impression without expression causes depression which may engender repression/suppression of further impressions. Let me start by commending you for your meritorious indefatigable efforts in making sure that accounting profession remain an enviable profession in Nigeria.
I am a Financial accounting teacher in a secondary school in Ekiti state. I write to create an awareness to your office about certain educational policies that are negatively gradually “crippling” the effectiveness and efficiency of accounting profession in Nigeria
First, non recognition of Financial Accounting as one of the basic requirements for admission into higher institutions to study “Accounting” or accounting related courses.
This is not unconnected with the apathy Developed by the students esp. at secondary school level about the subject. Now u see students in Commercial Class from SSS1-3 deciding not to register for Fin. Accounting in Final Exams such as WAEC NECO etc. because it is not a major requirement for admission by admission bodies eg JAMB. This without doubt is a major factor responsible for their nonchalant attitude towards the subject.
Second, substitution of Economics for Financial Accounting. U now see science and Arts students who could not meet up with admission requirements for courses in their departments without basic knowledge of accounting in secondary school studying accounting all in the name of passing Economics at O L.
For heaven sake can an accounting student be allowed to study any core science or Arts courses such as
Medicine ,Law etc without physics, Chemistry, biology, Lit in Eng, Govt etc respectively. Litle or no wonder u now see half baked Nigerian “corpers” who are graduates of accounting now tell u “pls give me another subject to teach ” when asked to teach Fin accounting in sch. It is not untrue that one can not give what he doesn’t have. The reason is obvious , “lack of basic understanding of the subject”
It is a usual advice from an elderly man that “Do something so that something w not do u” . ICAN should do something in order to save the profession from being crippled . In sch now. It is after when the science and Arts classes have been filled up they now force the remnants to commercial class to study a subject in which they don’t really have interest.
The truth of the matter remains, Economics as important as it is can not be substituted with Financial accounting.
Perhaps a quick review of their definitions will help.
“Accounting is defined as ” the art of recording, classifying, and summarizing in a significant manner and in terms of money, transactions and events which are, in part at least of financial character, and interpreting the results thereof “. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA)
WHILE
Economics is defined as ” the branch of knowledge concerned with the production, consumption, and transfer of wealth” Adv Learners dictionary
According to Lionel Robbins (1932) most commonly accepted current definition of the subject”: Economics is a science which studies human behaviour as a relationship between ends and scarce means which have alternative uses”
A vivid observation of the above definitional explanations has definitely brought us to the understanding of the fact that the duo are both different in principles and concepts.
Besides, Account teacher can teach economics successfully while economics teacher cannot teach Accounts.
Third, restriction of seminar/ in service training and special programmes to science teachers and students alone by the government. This doesn’t not only demoralise accounting teachers but also sends signal to the students how the subject is being treated as less important by the educational stakeholders. After all, What is good for the geese they say is equally good for the gander.
WHAT AM I SAYING.
Majority of our accounting graduates today are half baked and not employable because of either non accounting background or because they are left with the only option for their not meeting up to science and arts courses requirements but because of Economics.
The holy book says “When the foundation is faulty what shall the righteous do”. But can accounting students apply for any science or Arts core courses such as Medicine, engineering, Law, mass comm. etc. without physics, Chemistry, Bio and Lit,govt that form the basis of their courses respectively. Capital NO.
No wonder a student asked a question during an interactive forum with ANAN Sister Association that ” Why is it that accounting class seems to b a dumping ground?”
I opine that ANAN should use its good office to correct this abnormality at the appropriate quarters.
Summarily,
I want to recommend the following for quick action
1. that admission requirements for “Accounting” in university and polytechnics should be Mathematics, English, Financial Accounting, Economics and any other subject.
UTME subjects should also include Mathematics, English, Financial Accounting, Economics (if economics must be there)
2. Admission requirements of the would-be teachers of accounting at NCE level should include a credit pass in financial accounting
3. Teachers and students of accounting should no longer be left out in training schemes and special programmes by the educational stakeholders e.g Accounting teachers and students should be celebrate by Governments, ICAN and private organisations like in Sciences.
It is hoped that this write up will enjoy your good support and quick action for the benefit of our noble profession.
Thanks.
